Who was Herbert Weichmann?

Born in 1896 in Landsberg, died in 1983 in Hamburg.

Herbert Weichmann, namesake of our third house in Hamburg, was raised in a liberal Jewish family in Upper Silesia (now Poland). After serving in WWI, he studied law and joined the SPD in 1920. He became an important legal adviser in the Prussian civil service, including to Prime Minister Otto Braun. Removed from office by the Nazis’ “Law for the Restoration of the Civil Service,” he fled to Czechoslovakia in 1933 with his wife Elsbeth. They spent 15 years in exile—first in France, then in the U.S.—before returning to Germany at the request of Hamburg’s mayor Max Brauer. Weichmann served as President of the Court of Audit, then as Finance Senator, and from 1965 to 1971 as First Mayor of Hamburg. Key achievements during his term include the creation of the Justice Authority, major construction and infrastructure projects like the Hamburg TV tower and Congress Center, and efforts to secure the port’s economic future. Elsbeth Weichmann, a member of the Hamburg Parliament since 1957, was a close advisor throughout. Even in old age, Herbert Weichmann remained a vocal advocate for the rule of law.
