What is behind the Samson School?

Founded in Wolfenbüttel in 1786, closed in 1928

This house commemorates the Samson School, one of the most important Jewish educational institutions in Germany in the 18th and 19th centuries. Founded by the Samson family as a boarding school for Jewish boys, it combined religious education with secular knowledge—a pioneering project of the Jewish Enlightenment (Haskalah).

Many of its graduates became respected rabbis, scholars, or doctors. The school shaped intellectual life far beyond Wolfenbüttel. It was closed in 1928—National Socialism almost completely erased its legacy. Today, little remains to remind us of its former status.
