Who was Joachim Wach?

Born in 1898 in Chemnitz, died in 1955 in Orselina, Schwitzerland.

Joachim Wach is considered one of the founders of the academic fields of religious studies and the sociology of religion. He helped emancipate these disciplines from theology and philosophy and had a lasting impact on their development. His main interest was in understanding non-Western religions. Wach saw the core task of the sociology of religion as systematizing religious-historical data.
