Who actually was Alphons Silbermann?
Born 1909 in Cologne, died 2000 in Cologne.
Alphons Silbermann, namesake of our first house in Cologne, was extremely versatile! He studied musicology, law and sociology, worked as a judicial clerk and received his doctorate in 1933 in Cologne with a dissertation on international law. A year later he went into exile. In Australia, after working odd jobs as a dishwasher and waiter, he founded the country’s first fast-food chain. His entrepreneurial success enabled him to return to academia, now focusing on the sociology of music. Starting in the 1950s, the career changer again worked at European universities as a lecturer, instructor and later professor. In 1970, Silbermann regained his German citizenship and was tenured as a professor of mass communication and sociology of art in his hometown. Many of his thoughts, for example about prejudices and the role of the media, are currently of particular topicality!
