Who was Hedwig Klein?

Born in Antwerp in 1911, died in Auschwitz in 1942

The daughter of a Hungarian merchant, born in Antwerp, she graduated from high school in Hamburg and studied Islamic studies, Semitic studies, and English philology at the then Hansa University from 1932 onwards. Her academic expertise was highly regarded and enabled her, even as a Jew, to obtain her doctorate during the Nazi era (1937), although she was denied her doctoral title. As an outstanding linguist, she provided important text modules for the translation of Mein Kampf into Arabic; she hoped that this work would protect her and her family from deportation. Several attempts to leave Germany failed. Hedwig Klein was deported and murdered in Auschwitz after July 11, 1942.
