Who was Käthe Vordtriede?

Born in 1891 in Hanover, died in 1964 in New York

Born in Hanover, the author and politician settled in Freiburg in 1923 and became the city’s first full-time female journalist. She wrote for the SPD daily newspaper *Volkswacht*, was banned from publishing in 1933, and was subsequently imprisoned on several occasions. In 1939, the mother of two fled to Switzerland. It was not until 1941 that Käthe Vordtriede succeeded in emigrating to the United States, where she made ends meet with odd jobs and wrote for, among others, the German edition of the New York Herald Tribune. In 1964, shortly before her planned return to Germany, the Social Democrat died in exile in the United States.
